What is a real emergency
No cooling during extreme heat with infants, elderly residents, medical conditions or pets at home. No heat in freezing weather - a genuine pipe-freeze risk. Any burning or gas smell. Water actively leaking onto ceilings or floors. Sparking, smoking, or a breaker that trips repeatedly. Those all justify a 24 hour call.
What can wait until morning
One slightly warm room, a mildly noisy fan, a thermostat display quirk, or a mildly higher bill. Booking these as normal same-day appointments saves the after-hours premium.
No cooling: protect people first
Close blinds on sun-facing windows, run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans to pull hot air out, set ceiling fans counterclockwise, hydrate, move to the lowest floor, and if indoor temperatures become dangerous relocate vulnerable family members somewhere cool.
No heat: protect the house too
Close off unused rooms, cover windows at night, open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls, and let faucets drip slightly if temperatures are below freezing. Never heat with a gas range, grill or generator indoors - that is how carbon monoxide poisonings happen.
Turn it off in these cases
Water leaking from the indoor unit, a burning smell, ice covering the refrigerant lines, grinding or screeching noises, or a breaker that keeps tripping. Shutting down limits damage and often turns an expensive repair into a cheap one.
What to tell dispatch
Your address, the equipment type, exactly what it is and is not doing, when it started, any error codes on the thermostat or furnace LED, and whether anyone in the home is medically vulnerable. That last detail moves you up the queue.
What to expect on arrival
A real arrival window, a full diagnostic, a flat written price before work starts, and a truck stocked with the parts that cause most failures - capacitors, contactors, igniters, sensors, motors, fuses and refrigerant - so most emergency calls are solved in one visit.
Avoiding the next 2AM call
